La Cruz de Huanacaxtle
By Nora Hernández & Jesus de Avila • Translation by Eduardo Rincón-Gayardo – September 2008

cruzdehuanacaxtleThe tree and the sea came together in a corner of the bay to give birth to a legend that now makes room for the development of an impressive touristic project that, according to some accounts, represents an investment of over fifty million dollars.

Originally a fishing village, La Cruz de Huanacaxtle on Riviera Nayarit’s coastline, bathed by the calm sea of the Bahía de Banderas, is located twenty minutes north of Puerto Vallarta’s international airport. In this picturesque town of cobble-stone streets, the ocean breeze is present 365 days-a-year and according to the description by Don Manuel González ―better known as “Magallón”― the town owes its name to a young muleteer’s pruning of a “huanacaxtle” or “parota” tree upon passing through this area, so it would serve him as a route landmark or reference. There are other versions about the origin of the town’s name too.

“Magallón” comments that Florencio González Hernández and Vicente Chávez were the founders of La Cruz de Huanacaxtle in 1936, when it was a banana plantation. Those were hard times back then, powdered limestone was transported in canoes that cruised by means of oars and sails to be sold at Las Peñas, now Puerto Vallarta. Fishing was for the self-consumption of the first settlers, who were dedicated mainly to cultivating sesame, corn, squash and mango.

Today, like all the towns seated along the coastline of Bahía de Banderas and the Riviera Nayarit; La Cruz de Huanacaxtle is considered an attractive destination with tourism as its predominant economic activity, while it grows in its development, placed now it in the real estate chart of the region, a daring and most attractive real estate proposal.

cruzdehuanacaxtle Making the best of its years of popularity as a shelter for cruisers who sail down customarily as well as world navigators; upholding its respect for its natural environment and its rustic town essence and folklore, modernity has arrived to La Cruz de Huanacaxtle as it opens the way for a great commercial project with a spectacular marina, the 396-slips Marina Riviera Nayarit, designed to be the best marina of Mexico, with all services to host and cater to vessels from 30 to 400 feet long. This innovative project is being developed by stages and contemplates the construction of a fish market and docks with all services and advantages to fulfill all the needs of the local fishermen. There will also be a complete operations’ center for touristic services purveyors, such as bay cruises, whale watching and scuba diving, among other activities. The marina complex will comprise 310 condominiums, 100 commercial spaces, two hotels, a discovery center, underground parking for one-thousand vehicles, a dry-dock and a commercial center with restaurants, bars, boutiques and a spa. Bordering the small bay on which La Cruz de Huanacaxtle is located, residents and visitors will be able to stroll and enjoy a mile-long boardwalk that will include two restaurants with 360° views and an open-air theater.

La Cruz de Huanacaxtle is also growing in popularity as a very agreeable place to relax with a varied offer and exquisite gastronomy, going from the Mexican tidbits you can savor at small and picturesque restaurants and street stands, to the traditional fresh seafood that is the specialty of La Manzanilla beach; or the international gourmet cuisine in places like Black Forest & Frascatti, with menus specially designed to please the taste of well-travelled and demanding palates.

cruzdehuanacaxtleThe song of a vendor of freshly-cooked pastries; the fisherman weaving one of his net6s; the steaming pot cooking the corn-on-the-cob sold at the main square; the aroma of the marinated meat that will go in the tacos, among others, are only a few of the details you can observe while you discover the town of La Cruz de Huanacaxtle on a stroll, a magic place where its noble past prevails in the daily expressions and demeanor of its people, all this among a great development forecasting a stunning future.

Even with its fast-growing real estate development, La Cruz de Huanacaxtle, with approximately 2,500 inhabitants, maintains itself as a place where life goes by slowly, a quality that has made it a very attractive place for a community of foreign retired residents that continues to grow year after year.
